Whispers That Hunger, A New One-Woman Masterpiece Arrives at the National Arts Festival
THEATRE-SPACE- Sometimes the loudest story is told in silence.
Amaciko KwaZulu Art Project proudly presents THE QUIET, a breathtaking and deeply moving one-woman theatrical experience that tenderly unravels the hidden emotional world of trauma and depression.
Written by Simamkele Sodladla and rewritten and directed by Thamsanqa Simphiwe Khumalo, THE QUIET stars the remarkable Nolwazi Asanda Khanyile as Asante, a woman who escapes to an old, isolated house in search of peace. What she finds instead is a mysterious book with her name inside, and a house that listens too closely. As she reads, the walls begin to speak back, awakening the different versions of herself she has spent years trying to silence: the girl who smiled too loudly to hide her pain, the lonely child still waiting for love, and the furious woman she buried to remain acceptable.
Blending poetic storytelling, powerful physical theatre, and haunting sound design, THE QUIET is an intimate, visceral journey into the beauty and brutality of unspoken pain and the courage required to finally break the silence.
“This play is a love letter to every woman who was taught that strength means staying quiet,” says director Thamsanqa Simphiwe Khumalo. “It is about the house we build inside ourselves when we swallow our tears, our rage, and our truth. The Quiet invites us to sit with the discomfort of honesty and discover that healing often begins where silence ends.”
Writer Simamkele Sodladla adds: “I wrote this from a very personal space. So many of us smile while breaking. This story is for anyone who has ever felt invisible in their own pain. May it remind them that their voice still matters.”
THE QUIET marks a powerful new chapter for both Sodladla and rising star Nolwazi Khanyile, who delivers a tour-de-force performance in her first one-woman production.
